These squares get their name from the orange colour of the topping when baked. There is no orange in the recipe.

Crust

1 cup all-purpose flour

2 tbsp firmly packed brown sugar

1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, melted

Topping

2 large eggs

1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar

1 tsp pure vanilla extract

1/4 cup all-purpose flour

1 tsp baking powder

Pinch salt

Make the crust: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour and brown sugar. Add the melted butter and stir to combine well. Press the mixture evenly in the bottom of an 8-inch square baking pan. Bake in a 350° F oven until golden, 12 to 15 minutes. Let cool completely.

Make the topping: In a medium bowl, beat the eggs and brown sugar together until light and fluffy. Stir in the vanilla. Stir in the flour, baking powder and salt until combined well.

Pour the topping evenly over the cooled crust. Bake in a 350° F oven until the topping is set, 15 to 20 minutes. Cool and cut into squares.
